A Visit to “Air Hidup” High School

By Gede Raka

‘Air Hidup’ is a high school at Wano Rita, a village in Sumba Barat Daya (South West Sumba) Regency. Established in 2017, the school operates with very simple facilities. Its building is made of bamboos. It was built by Air Hidup Foundation that founded and manages the school. The students come from economically less fortunate families from nearby villages.

Despite the school’s simple facilities, one can observe highly motivated students as well as full dedication and genuine commitment of teachers, the school principal, and staff of the Air Hidup Foundation. They give their best to their students. Mr. Yulius Bale Ati, who is a priest, is the chairman of the Air Hidup Foundation. He explained that the learning material and learning processes in this high school emphasize character building heavily, such as self-discipline, responsibility, honesty, perseverance, optimism, hard-working, self-confidence, and caring.
